Last week I followed a migration from an old SBS 2003 to a more recent exchange 2010. After having configured some’ stuff on the new mail server I wanted to do some tests to see if the mail routing was working correctly (sometimes it happens that the routing group between 2003 and 2010 that is configured automatically during the installation doesn't behave in the correct way). I try to move a test mailbox (Assyrus) from sbs2003 to exchange 2010 by a move-request, but I immediately get this error:
Summary: 1 item(s). 0 succeeded, 1 failed.

I do a few checks to try to understand what may be the networking side problem that prevents the communication between the two servers that are on the same subnet and both resolve names correctly. I think what may be different compared to all the other exchange migrations that I have come across… mh I think there is something in sbs that cause the issue…
I remember that in the Small Business Server 2003 suite ISA 2004 was present as a component (I don't remember if it was automatically installed by default or if you could install it as an option) and, indeed, there was its management console available, I try’ to look at any rules and I see that there are a series of default filters that I have no idea what they do but that it is very likely they are blocking something. I exclude by default some of these filters as the cause and then I try to disable some others to finally find out the cause of the problem: “RPC Filter”!
By disabling that I finally managed to move the mailboxes from sbs 2003 to exchange 2010.
